Part 3 - Amazing National Park Campsites - DG Overlanding

 Amazing National Park Campsites (Kruger & Mapungubwe)

Punda Maria Rest Camp

and

Mazhou Campsite

1. Punda Maria Rest Camp

• Typical Kruger National Park Campsite
• First come first served (no pre booking of sites)
• Electric Power at some sites (generator in times of load shedding!) and also non-electrified sites
• Central scullery areas
• Good clean communal ablution blocks
• Some sites have a braai
• No fire pits
• Water is potable

    2. Mazhou Campsite

You need to check in at the main reception for Mapungubwe National Park. This is 29km's on a gravel road that can sometimes be in a poor condition, or 42km's on the tar road.

Watch out for the monkeys and baboons (although the baboons did not come into the camp when we camped  there)

• Good clean communal ablution block in the centre of the camping area
• Sites have a braai
• No fire pits

Tsendze  Rustic Campsite

Shingwedzi Rest Camp

1. Tsendze Rustic Campsite

This is termed a "rustic campsite" because it only caters for campers. No chalets or safari tents here. In addition, the campsite has no electric power. It's a lovely campsite and very peaceful and quiet.

• No Power
• Braai Facilities
• Lovely communal ablutions with an outside shower as well.
• Nice "kitchen" area with 2 plate gas stoves and wash up facilities
• Sites are allocated by number when you book. If you want a specific site you must request that by calling Mopani reception.
• Check in at Mopani restcamp.

    

2. Shingwedzi Rest Camp

• Typical Kruger National Park Campsites
• First come first served (no pre booking of sites)
• Electric Power (generator in times of load shedding!)

• Good clean communal ablution blocks
• Some sites have a braai

Is Dinokeng the BEST Camping Spot?

This is part 1 of our series on Bush Camps in the Dinokeng.

These 2 both have private ablutions. 

Jabula has:

• No power and is unfenced, so you get the real African bush experience
• Private ablution (at each campsite) and private wash up area with outdoor shower as well.
• Fire and braai pit

Erasmus has:

• Power
• It is fenced
• Has private ablutions, in a block of 3 each, so not actually at your site but very close by.
• Portable fire pit and a portable braai.

This is rugged unforgiving territory! You need to at least have a high ground clearance vehicle and if you towing, then a 4x4 is really recommended (if not a necessity). There are some amazing, yet steep, gravel passes to negotiate to get to De Hoop. But the end result is really stunning.

The campsites were getting new ablution facilities when we visited, but some still only have cold water and there is no electricity, (except at Sendelingsdrif). In addition, the water is not potable, so bring your own. There is a small shop supplying the necessities (at Sendelingsdrif) as well as a fuel station. If the Orange River is not in flood, then Sendelingsdrif also serves as a border crossing (via ferry) into Namibia.

Lefokeng Bush Camp - Dinokeng Game Reserve

Another amazing bush camp !!

Lefokeng Bush Camp is fenced, but situated within the Dinokeng Game Reserve. No grass (but super clean and raked earth), but each site has a lovely braai and fire pit. 

Some sites offer a fantastic private ablution while others make use of the amazing communal ablution facilities. There is a super swimming pool as well as a space where you can purchase wood and ice. Electric power is provided at each site as well.

This bush camp is stunning !

Located just outside of Dinokeng Game Reserve in Gauteng, it's close to Johannesburg and Pretoria. 

The campsite is lush with trees, and it's on a game farm with many animals roaming around. It has a lovely swimming pool and a small honesty shop for ice, wood and ice-creams. The ablutions, all private for each site are really nice. They offer electric power, braai as well as a fire pit. Some of the campsites even have their own plunge poos, which can be heated via a pool donkey boiler.

We have stayed at the stunning Red Sands Country Lodge campsite a few times. Nestled in the heart of nature, this campsite offers an unforgettable experience.

Red Sands offers private as well as communal ablutions (all super clean!). There is limited (if any depending on the season) grass. But all campsites have electric power as well as fire/braai areas. It's on a game farm, (you can also drive around) so some animals do come around. Also, they have a lovely restaurant where dinner and breakfast are served.

They do also have chalets, which are also excellent.

A lovely campsite for an ideal stop-off if travelling further into the Northern Cape !!
