DG Overlanding campsite
review of Sendelingsdrif Campsite in the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier
Park.
This campsite is in a rough
sandy/rocky deset area known as the Richtersveld. There is no power at the
campsites so you need to have solar to keep the fridge and freezer running. In
the summer months it can get really hot ! The water was not potable, so you
need to also bring your own.
It's a remote camping
experieance, but you can get to this campsite in a 4x2 or high ground clearance
vehicle. But if you want to visit the rest of the Richtersveld you will need an
off road and 4x4 vehicle.
Sendelingsdrif it also a
border crossing into Namibia, via a pontoon. No trucks allowed and also check
that the ferry is running if you want to cross into Namibia, as if the river
level is high the ferry is normally closed.
There is a small shop with
the basics as well as a fuel station at Sendelingsdrif. They also have chalets
here, if required. It’s near a mining area, so can sometimes be a little noisy,
however we had no issues when we camped here.
The ablutions are good, with
hot and cold water and flush toilets.
2 of the sites have shade and
some have a braai/fire pit.
Sendelingsdrif is on the Orange
River, in the far Northern Cape of South Africa and there are some nice easy
walks that you can take along the riverbank.
Enjoy - its a lovely
experieance visiting the Richtersveld.
